Force Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Police Force, Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Olumuyiwa Adejobi, has advised Nigerians against assaulting a police officer in the uniform.
CSP Adejobi in a three-part thread on Twitter said a ‘civilian’ has no right to retaliate even if an officer on a uniform ‘slaps’ them.
While explaining that assaulting an officer on the uniform is a disrespect to the nation, and is punishable under the criminal law, he noted that even when the officer is at fault, the ‘civilian’ should never retaliate.
The police spokesperson advised victims of police high-handedness to file a complaint with the law enforcement agency rather than take the law into their own hands.
“Even if a policeman in uniform slaps a civilian, the civilian has no right to retaliate,” CSP Adejobi tweeted in reaction to a video showing two men wrestling down a gun-wielding police officer in a heated argument.
He explained: “More so if he’s on the uniform, it’s an act of disrespect to Nigeria to beat an officer on the uniform.
“The disrespect is not to the policeman but to our nation and it’s a crime as enshrined in our criminal laws. So it’s not a case of what the policeman did that led to it, but the reaction of the civilians who actually assaulted the police.
“If the police assaults a civilian, you report and actions will be taken to rebuke him, not to take the law into our hands. Let alone if it’s a matter of checking of phones, which can be easily reported and addressed.”
