The 54 different attacks carried out by suspected herdsmen in 10 wards of  Makurdi and Gwer-West LGAs of Benue state have claimed the lives of over 600 people.

A forum in the state known as Tyoshin Academics (FOTA) made the allegation in a statement issued to newsmen on Friday, saying the fatalities were documented in 11 years which affected 8 wards in Gwer-West LGAs and 2 wards in Makurdi LGA.

The statement was signed by the chairman and Secretary of the forum Prof. Joseph Kerker and Dr. Terkula Maga respectively lauded the military for countering attacks on Naka, the administrative headquarters of Gwer-West LGA of the state.

The forum stated that during the attacks property worth millions of naira, including worship centers, houses, schools, hospitals, bridges, and social amenities were destroyed.

The statement reads in part: “It is worthy of note that until recently, the Tyoshin nation was known for its peaceful and calm atmosphere, both for its indigenous people and settlers alike.

“Disguised as pastoralists, the armed Fulani herdsmen/militia have an agenda, to kill, rape, maim, occupy, and annex the whole Tyoshin community.

“As of 12th February 2023, over 600 persons from eight council wards (Mbapa, Sengev, Saghev/Ukusu, Mbachohon, Tyoughatee, Mbabuande Gaambe Ushin, and Gbaange/Tongov) in Gwer West and two council wards (Modern Market and Bar) in Makurdi LGAs have been displaced from their homes and are now living in refugee camps in Naka, Makurdi and other parts of the state. This has created a serious humanitarian crisis requiring urgent attention”.
