All staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) found negligent in the last presidential and National Assembly elections has been banned from participating in the upcoming governorship and state assemblies elections.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will on Saturday March, 11, 2023 conduct elections for 28 state governorship and 993 state houses of assembly seats.

Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, INEC Chairman who announced this Saturday in Abuja at a meeting with the Resident Electoral commissioners (RECs) in Abuja on Saturday, said the commission now trying to addressed identified challenges before the last lap of the general elections.

“All staff found to be negligent, whether they are regular or ad hoc officials, including collation and returning officers (ROs), must not be involved in forthcoming elections.

“As we approach the governorship and state assembly elections, we must work harder to overcome the challenges experienced in the last election. Nothing else will be acceptable to Nigerians.

“RECs must also immediately initiate disciplinary action where prima facie evidence of wrongdoing has been established,” Yakubu said.

He explained that the purpose of the meeting is to discuss how  to conduct the remaining elections, based on issues that arise from the presidential and National Assembly elections held a week.

Mahmood then cherished the maturity exhibited by political leaders despite divergent views on the elections.
