Nigerian singer Ahmed Ololade, popularly known by his stage name Asake, won the ‘Best African Artiste of the Year’ award at the 24th edition of the annual Vodafone Ghana Music Awards, VGMA.

The award ceremony considered the biggest night for Ghana music was held on May 7, 2023, at the Grand Arena of the Accra International Conference Center, AICC with electrifying performances by some of Ghana’s most sought-after artistes such as Sarkodie, King Promise, Gyakie, Black Sherif, DSL, Epixode, among others.

Asake was pitted in the ‘Best African Artiste’ category alongside Ayra Starr, Burna Boy and Kizz Daniel from Nigeria; Libianca from Cameroon and The Therapist from Sierra Leone.

Ghana’s Black Sherif won the ‘Artiste of the Year’, the ultimate prize of the night and his ‘Kweku the Traveller’ won the ‘Most Popular Song of the Year’ and ‘Best Hip-Hop Song’ awards. His ‘Konogo Zongo’ visuals also won the ‘Best Music Video’ award.

The ‘Collaboration of the Year’ award went to Sarkodie’s ‘Country Side’ which features Black Sherif.

The remix of Camidoh’s ‘Sugarcane’ which features King Promise and Mayorkun won the ‘International Collaboration of the Year’ and ‘Best Afrobeats Song’ awards.

The ‘Record of the Year’ award went to Gyakie’s ‘Far Away’ while ‘5 Star’ by King Promise snagged the ‘Album of the Year’ award.

Sarkodie smiled home with the ‘Best Hiplife/ Hiphop Artiste’ award and King Promise took the ‘Best Afrobeats/Afropop Artiste’ award home.
