The Press Secretary to Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo of Anambra State, Mr. Christian Aburime, has called on the state’s residents to remain vigilant and proactive as they face the potential threat of an upcoming flood, as forecasted by relevant government agencies.
In a statement provided to reporters in Awka, Aburime emphasized the commitment of Governor Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo’s administration to ensuring the safety and welfare of the citizens, especially as the state braces itself for the 2023 flood risk.
The statement read, “With the annual release of surplus water from Cameroon’s Lagdo Dam upon us, there is a looming danger of substantial flooding that could jeopardize lives, homes, and livelihoods in susceptible regions of Nigeria.
“It is of utmost importance to be aware, informed, and ready in the face of this potential crisis.
“According to the National Emergency Management Agency, the authorities in Cameroon have recently issued their annual alert regarding the release of dam water. Approximately 11 states, including Anambra, Adamawa, Taraba, Benue, Nasarawa, Kogi, Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, and Cross River, are likely to experience the adverse effects of the dam’s opening.
“The Lagdo Dam in Cameroon releases excess water annually to regulate its reservoir levels during the current rainy season. This discharge typically leads to elevated water levels in the Benue River and its tributaries, which could subsequently result in destructive floods in adjacent downstream areas, including Anambra State.
“Last year’s tragic incident served as a painful reminder of the destructive force of these floods, as numerous communities in our state faced unparalleled destruction and losses.
“Undoubtedly, the safety of the people of Anambra, under the capable leadership of Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo CFR, is of primary concern at all times.
“In order to prevent a recurrence of last year’s catastrophe and in anticipation of this year’s flood event, the government has proactively taken measures to mitigate the potential impact of flooding.
“To this end, a dedicated flood committee led by Deputy Governor Dr. Onyekachukwu Ibezim has initiated contingency plans and risk management strategies.
“Already, the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) has issued early warnings to all individuals residing in flood-prone areas to promptly relocate to secure Internally Displaced People (IDP) camps provided by Governor Charles Soludo.
“Particularly, residents of flood-affected local government areas such as Ogbaru, Ayamelum, Anambra East and West, Onitsha North and South, Awka North, Idemmili South, Ekwusigo, and Ihiala, have been strongly advised to relocate without delay.
“Our elderly citizens, women, and children will receive special assistance in moving to the safer IDP camps, along with their valuable possessions, household items, agricultural produce, and livestock.
“Additionally, awareness campaigns are in full swing. Transition Council chairpersons in affected LGAs have been tasked with connecting with churches, markets, and other densely populated areas within flood-prone zones to disseminate accurate information.
“The state Ministry of Information is also broadcasting the impending flood alert across appropriate media channels.
“Simultaneously, as the evacuation of affected residents begins, floodplains are being closely monitored to gauge water level rises and to trigger alarms when the rise becomes critical.
“It is imperative for those in flood-prone areas to heed evacuation orders promptly.
“In the event of requiring emergency services during the flood, the state’s emergency response teams are on high alert and fully equipped to provide immediate assistance.
“These response teams will effectively manage various situations and extend support to affected individuals and communities.
“As conscientious and vigilant citizens, our cooperation is vital now to avert a disaster.
“The people of Anambra are advised to remain composed and stay updated with accurate information from official sources to prevent misinformation and confusion.
“Families should support one another, while communities and neighbors should collaborate to assist those in need of evacuation or flood preparation.
“Overall, let’s remember the lessons learned from last year’s devastating floods and take proactive steps now to ensure the safety of ourselves, our families, our possessions, our property, and our communities.
“By staying informed, cooperating with government initiatives, and acting responsibly, we can collectively confront this challenge and minimize the impact of the impending flood.
“The people of Anambra can trust that the Anambra State Government, led by Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, is unwavering in its commitment to their safety and well-being.”
