A church building caved in early Tuesday morning in Makurdi, the Benue State capital, killing one person and injuring three others.
The victims, the presiding pastor of the church and three members were reportedly inside the building praying when the incident happened.
The pastor identified as Baba Emmanuel died while others escaped the wreckage with serious injuries.
The church, a parish of Dunamis International Gospel Centre, is located at Mission Ward North Bank in Makurdi.
The commissioner of police in Benue, Bartholomew Onyeka told journalists in Makurdi that the church building collapsed at 2:00 a.m. He said the cause is yet to be ascertained.
Building collapses are becoming rampant in Nigeria with more than a dozen of such failures recorded in the last year.
In August, a mosque collapsed in Kaduna State, killing seven people. Such disasters are often blamed on the failure of officials to enforce building safety regulations and the use of substandard construction materials.
