In a marathon court session on Friday, the Supreme Court of Nigeria delivered judgements on petitions seeking to remove eight State governors from office after the 18 March 2023 polls.

The governors whose elections are being challenged before the court are Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State; Abba Yusuf of Kano State, Alex Otti of Abia State; Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State; Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State; Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State; Bassey Otu of Cross River and Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State.

The apex court’s verdict was delivered by a five-member panel led by Justice Inyang Okoro.

Governors Yusuf of Kano and Muftwang of Plateau went to the Supreme Court to annul the judgement by the Appeal Court that sacked them from office.

The apex court overruled the sack and affirmed Yusuf and Mutfwang as the elected governors of Kano and Plateau State respectively.

The governors of Zamfara, Cross River, Bauchi, Lagos Abia and Ebonyi also won in their respective cases.

The Supreme Court reaffirmed the governors’ election victories and dismissed the petitions by the opposition that sought to nullify their elections in their various states.
