The mounting security crisis that has gripped Northwest Zamfara State in recent times has led to the impeachment of the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Bilyaminu Moriki.

Moriki’s impeachment last Thursday was endorsed by 18 out of 24 members of the House after a motion was moved to that effect by Hon. Nasiru Abdullahi who is representing the Maru constituency.

The lawmakers pointed to the relentless attacks, deaths, and abductions that have become a grim part of the daily life of the people which has overwhelmed Moriki.

The lawmakers, driven by a pressing need to confront the escalating banditry attacks by Fulani radical Muslim terrorists plaguing the state that prides itself as the land of farming, elected an interim speaker.

The House charged Bashar Gummi, Moriki’s replacement, for the time being, to rise to the challenging task and devise every possible means to end the nightmarish attacks.

“Our people are being killed and abducted daily,” said Hon. Shamsudeen Basko, representing the Talata Mafara constituency, “We need to stand up and do something to defend our people.”

“The Authority has also instructed the President of the Commission to invite Burkina Faso, Niger, Mali, and Guinea, to attend the technical and consultative meetings of ECOWAS as well as all security-related meetings,” Touray added.

“The authority calls on ECOWAS institutions, member states the United Nations Mine Action Office, UNMAO, and other regional institutions to implement this decision.”
