The Enugu State Police Command advises citizens, particularly businessmen and women, to be cautious and security conscious in their transactions so as not to fall prey to unscrupulous fraudulent suspects like Nnamani Joseph, a fake philanthropist arrested by the operatives.

The Command also calls on any person who may have suffered a similar act of fraud by the suspect or another to report to the Ogui Police Division to volunteer relevant information which will lead to clamping down on the gang.

In the Command’s official bulletin signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, the police operatives disclosed that the 45 years old male suspect, Nnamani Joseph, defrauded a businessman of eighteen (18) bags of 25kg rice in the guise of sharing it for charity purpose in the church.

Out of the 18 bags of rice valued at four hundred thousand naira only carted away by the hoodlum, only 8 bags were recovered by the police operatives serving in the Ogui Police Division, Enugu Command.

“On February 14, 2024, being Valentine’s Day, Nnamani went to the premises of a church (name withheld) in Ogui, Enugu, from where he called the businessman (names withheld) on the phone, requesting eighteen (18) 25 kg bags of rice valued at four hundred thousand naira only, with the pretense of wanting to use the same for charity to the church.”

“The businessman accordingly supplied the rice and unsuspectingly followed Nnamani to the bank to receive his payment through bank transfer.”

“But in the course of effecting the payment, Nnamani secretly left the bank, went back to the church, and made away with the bags of rice to an unknown destination.”

“Upon receiving the report, Police operatives embarked on an intelligence-driven investigation, which led to his arrest on February 20, 2024, at Enene, Enugu; eight (8) out of the eighteen (18) 25 kg bags of rice were recovered from him, after he had re-bagged and sold the other bags at Oye Enene Market, Enugu.”

Investigations are still ongoing to bring Nnamani and cohorts to books; they will be charged to court once investigations are concluded.
