It was an emotional moment for business mogul Aliko Dangote at the night of tribute for the late Chief Executive Officer of Access Holdings, Herbert Wigwe held last night at Eko Hotel in Lagos.

The event was tagged, “Celebrating Herbert Wigwe’s Professional Legacy.”

Pilot News reported that Wigwe, his wife, son, and Abimbola Ogunbanjo, a former chair of the Nigerian stock exchange, were killed in a helicopter crash in California on Friday, 9 February.

At the Night of Tribute in honour of the late Wigwe, Dangote wept and was almost inconsolable as he paid tribute to the memory of his late friend.

“He was a pillar of strength and support for me and my family. He was proud to be part of my success story and I am proud to call him a dear friend,” the billionaire businessman said.

“It will be impossible to find another Herbert. His courage was second to none and was really fearless, not scared of anything.”

“We shared a common principle of perseverance. Bidding farewell to a brother, mentee and friend is indeed a hard task for me. I am consoled that Herbert had run a successful race and has gone to a better place.”

But it was not all tears as Dangote seized the moment to immortalise Wigwe, by naming the road leading to the Dangote Refinery after him.

“To immortalise my beloved friend, my brother, and my mentee, I have actually decided to name a major refinery and petrochemical road, out of the 120 kilometres, the biggest road will now be named ‘Herbert Wigwe,'” he said.

The event was attended by the host governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and his Ogun State counterpart, Dapo Abiodun, and the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Yemi Cardoso.

Others were the Minister of Finance, Wale Edun; the President of the African Development Bank, AfDB, Akinwumi Adesina; the chief executive of Guaranty Trust Holding Company Plc., Segun Agbaje; and the chief executive/managing director of Access Bank, Roosevelt Ogbonna, among other dignitaries.
