The Super Falcons, Nigeria’s senior women’s football team, have qualified for the 2024 Paris Olympics, after a 16-year hiatus
The team secured their spot after a tense second-leg match against South Africa’s Banyana Banyana.
The first leg in Abuja ended in a goalless draw, but the Nigerian team held their nerve in the second leg in Pretoria on Tuesday night, which also ended in a 0-0 stalemate. However, the Super Falcons secured victory thanks to their away goal from the first leg.
The win has ignited national pride and excitement, and Sports Minister John Enoh praised the team’s extraordinary display of tenacity and doggedness.
“Today, we salute the Super Falcons for their extraordinary display of tenacity and doggedness, breaking barriers and reclaiming Nigeria’s spot on the Olympic stage,” Enoh said.
“Their victory is not just a triumph for Nigerian football, but a testament to the power of dedication and teamwork.”
This victory marks Nigeria’s return to the Olympic stage after their last appearance in 2008 at the Beijing Games.
Football enthusiasts across the country are already buzzing with anticipation for Paris 2024, which will take place from 26th July to 11th August 2024.
