A deadly attack on a police checkpoint in Ebonyi State has left one officer dead and a patrol vehicle destroyed.
The incident occurred on Thursday, 11th April 2024, at approximately 7:15 a.m. at Ishieke junction, along the Enugu–Abakaliki Expressway.
According to DSP Joshua Ukandu, spokesperson for the Ebonyi State Police Command, unidentified gunmen travelling in a silver Sienna vehicle ambushed the officers.
The assault resulted in the death of one police officer and the burning of a patrol vehicle. Though the officers fought back, they were unable to save their colleague.
“The hoodlums shot sporadically at the officers, who engaged them fiercely and were able to repel them,” Ukandu said. “However, one of the officers was fatally wounded, and a patrol car was set ablaze.”
Authorities responded swiftly, deploying extra officers to search for the attackers. While normalcy has returned to the area, an investigation is underway to apprehend those responsible.
Local sources initially reported a second officer killed, but this has not been confirmed. “More details will be made available soon,” DSP Ukandu said.
