The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has declared Yahaya Bello, the immediate past governor of Kogi State, wanted. This move follows accusations of financial impropriety during Bello’s time in office.
The EFCC alleges that Bello is involved in “economic and financial crimes” amounting to a staggering N80.2 billion. In a statement, the agency called on the public to provide any information on Bello’s whereabouts.
Governor Bello, who served two terms from 2016 to 2024, has been a magnet for controversy. His administration faced consistent criticism for alleged financial mismanagement, including non-payment of civil servant salaries. The EFCC investigation into Bello’s finances reportedly commenced months ago.
Bello’s whereabouts are currently unknown, having reportedly fled his home in Abuja on Wednesday when EFCC officers went to arrest him. Yet he is challenging an arrest warrant issued against him., which adds another layer to the ongoing saga.
If the court upholds the warrant, the EFCC will intensify its efforts to apprehend Bello. Conversely, if the court rules in Bello’s favour, it could potentially delay or even halt the investigation.
