The Enugu State Government has revealed plans to provide adequate power supply to the state by engaging developers and investors interested in setting up power generation plants in accordance with the Federal Ministry of Power’s new electricity distribution policy- willing-buyer and willing-seller.

Speaking at a town hall meeting on Consumer Complaint Resolution organized by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, at Oakland hotel, Ebeano Tunnel Crossing Estate Enugu, the Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Chidiebere Onyia reemphasized the role of steady power supply in growing the state economy from 4.4 to 30 billion dollars as projected by his administration before 2031.

“Enugu State is poised to catalyze the economic growth of the South-East through a cost effective and efficient power supply to grow our Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and industries among others,”.

The SSG also disclosed efforts by the government to ensure that all have access to electricity by studying underserved and unserved communities even as it constitutes management of the newly established Enugu State Electrification Agency.

Encouraging persons with complaints to speak up with evidence, Prof. Onyia says the state government is interested in the affairs and wellbeing of the people and will not allow electricity consumers to be overcharged.

The NERC Commissioner for Consumer Affairs, Aisha Mahmud, also addressed consumers at the meeting encouraging them to speak up as the Regulatory Commission is people oriented.

Complaints recorded in the meeting vary from electricity bills, meter, transformer issues and the high tariff; some consumers complained of reduced power supply and the increased tariff.

While Band A customers, facing over a 250% increase in new electricity tariff, now enjoy improved power supply, there are reports of very poor supply by customers in other Bands since the new tariff regime came into effect.

Customers in other bands categories in the EEDC supply chain accuse the Energy distribution company of diverting and concentrating power supply to Band A customers who pay higher tariffs under the new pricing scheme, while leaving other Band customers in darkness.
