Nigerian troops have uncovered a bakery believed to be owned by the Islamic State’s West Africa Province, ISWAP, terror group during a weekend operation in Borno state.
The raid, conducted by a combined force comprising the 199 Special Forces Battalion, Hybrid Forces, and Civilian Joint Task Force, CJTF, took place on 21st April in the village of Maisani, located within the Timbuktu Triangle of Damboa Local Government Area.
Security analyst Zagazola Makama revealed the discovery on social media, stating that intelligence sources confirmed the bakery belonged to ISWAP. The troops destroyed the bakery and seized equipment, including generators, a baking machine, and various baking supplies.
This discovery sheds light on the potential methods used by ISWAP to fund their activities. The bakery’s location within the Timbuktu Triangle, a known insurgent stronghold, suggests it may have provided a source of income for the terror group.
The Nigerian Army has achieved some success in recent months against Boko Haram and its splinter faction, ISWAP. However, this discovery highlights the ongoing challenges faced by security forces in tackling the insurgency in Nigeria’s northeast.
