A joint military operation between Nigeria and Niger has successfully neutralised several Boko Haram insurgents attempting to cross into Nigerian territory, according to a report by security analyst Zagazola Makama.
The operation, which took place in Borno State, Nigeria, targeted a group of terrorists at Arege village in Abadam local government area of Borno State, located along the fringes of the two countries’ borders.
The terrorists were running for their lives after an attack on a Nigerian military unit left four Nigerien soldiers injured. The military gave them a hot chase and they sought solace within neighboring Nigeria.
Unknown to the insurgents, they were not welcomed in Nigeria. The Nigerian military received a signal through their Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) mission that a large number of terrorists were flocking into Nigeria from the Niger Republic.
The military sent out an attack aircraft which “recorded accurate hits within the target area, resulting in the obliteration of several insurgents.” Details regarding the exact number of insurgents neutralised remain undisclosed.
This joint effort highlights the increasing collaboration between Nigeria and Niger in the fight against the terrorist group Boko Haram, which has plagued the Lake Chad region for over a decade.
The Nigerian military has recently intensified its operations against Boko Haram, with a focus on dismantling their hideouts and disrupting their supply chains.
