In a move aimed at boosting the living standards of civil servants in Edo State, Governor Godwin Obaseki announced a significant increase in the minimum wage.
Effective 1st May 2024, the minimum wage for Edo State government workers will jump from N40,000 to N70,000, representing a 75 per cent increase.
The announcement came during the inauguration of the newly built Labour House complex in Benin City on Monday.
Governor Obaseki said the decision was his administration’s “efforts to make life and conditions better for our workers despite the challenging economic environment.”
The announcement comes amidst nationwide calls for an increase in the minimum wage due to rising inflation.
The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has been pressuring the federal government to address the widening gap between income and the cost of living.
Edo State becomes one of the first in the country to implement such a substantial increase in the minimum wage for civil servants.
The NLC would likely react positively to this development, potentially putting further pressure on the federal government to consider a national minimum wage increase.
