The Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, has announced the appointment of former Nigerian winger Finidi George as the new head coach of the national team, the Super Eagles. This comes after months of speculation following the departure of Portuguese coach José Peseiro in February.

George, a highly decorated player in his own right, served as Peseiro’s assistant for the past 20 months. He previously enjoyed a successful playing career, featuring for Nigeria in two World Cups and winning the Africa Cup of Nations in 1994. Notably, he assisted Rashidi Yekini in scoring Nigeria’s first-ever World Cup goal.

The NFF Technical and Development Committee recommended George for the head coaching role, which the board approved. This move reflects the federation’s confidence in George’s ability to translate his playing experience and recent coaching stint with the national team into success for the Super Eagles.

George’s immediate challenge will be crucial. The Super Eagles currently sit in third place in Group C of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, needing victories in their upcoming matches against South Africa and Benin Republic to stay in contention.
