The Nigerian military received a boost in its fight against insecurity with the recent delivery of 20 improved Armoured Personnel Carriers, APCs, on Wednesday.
General Christopher Musa, Chief of Defence Staff, CDS, received the new vehicles in a ceremony held in Abuja. The Permanent Secretary Ministry of Defence, Dr Ibrahim Kana, representing the Minister of Defence, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru, handed over the keys of the APCs to General Musa on Wednesday.
These APCs are not just any addition to the arsenal. According to Kana, they represent an “improved version” with enhanced capabilities. These upgrades include better weaponry and communication systems, allowing for more effective target location and engagement. The improved APCs also facilitate seamless military operations.
The Permanent Secretary further highlighted that these new fighting platforms were produced and supplied by a domestic Nigerian company, which underscores the government’s commitment to supporting local military production.
Kana described the consideration for contracting local manufacturers to produce the new APCs as a welcomed development. He added that it would save the nation a lot of money, create employment and reduce over reliance on foreign currency.
The arrival of these APCs comes at a crucial time for Nigeria, which faces ongoing security challenges. The expectation is that these new machines will play a significant role in strengthening the military’s efforts to combat these threats.
The CDS thanked the Minister of Defence and pledged to put the carriers to optimum and judicious use, saying the machines would definitely boost the ongoing offensive against terrorist, bandits and other criminal groups in the country.
