Suspected members of the Islamic State West Africa Province, ISWAP, terror group launched a deadly attack on a police team in Borno State on Monday night.
The assault, in Marte local government area, resulted in the death of a Divisional Police Officer, DPO, and injuries to two other officers.
According to local sources, the heavily armed insurgents stormed the community at about 7:30 p.m., targeting a health worker who narrowly escaped abduction.
The resident ran to a nearby police station to raise the alarm, and the DPO, identified as Sunday Pius, mobilised officers on duty for a counterattack.
However, the DPO was tragically killed in an ambush by the terrorists. Two other officers were wounded during the attack and are currently receiving treatment at a medical facility. The extent of their injuries remains unknown.
Details about the number of attackers and their escape remain unclear.
Marte has been one of the epicentres of the decade-long insurgency waged by Boko Haram and its splinter factions, including ISWAP in Borno State.
