Abba Kyari, the suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police, DCP, facing drug trafficking charges, has been temporarily released from custody by a Federal High Court in Abuja.
Mr Kyari, once celebrated as a “supercop,” has been incarcerated since his arrest in February 2022.
The court presided over by Justice Emeka Nwite, granted him a two-week bail on compassionate grounds to allow him to attend his mother’s burial in Borno State.
The court ruling followed an application by Mr. Kyari’s legal team. His mother, Yachilla Kyari, passed away on 5th May 2024.
This temporary release does not affect the ongoing trial. Mr. Kyari faces charges including conspiracy, illegal dealing in cocaine, importation of cocaine, and obstruction of narcotic officials. He has maintained his innocence on all charges.
The court imposed bail conditions. Kyari must pay a N50 million bond and secure a guarantor for the same amount. He is also required to surrender his international passport and report to the nearest National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, office throughout the two weeks.
