Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has announced a cash reward of ₦310 million to youth leaders across the 31 local government areas for boycotting the recent #EndBadGovernance protest.
The Governor had previously assured stakeholders that he would appreciate the youths if they refrained from participating in the nationwide protests, which were held from 1st to 10th August.
Speaking at a thank-you rally at Uyo Township Stadium on Tuesday, Governor Eno disclosed that each local government area would receive ₦10 million. He emphasised that the funds would be distributed across party lines.
“The leadership of the youths in each LGA will receive the money and distribute it across party lines,” the Governor stated.
Governor Eno commended the youths for not being a part of the #EndBadGovernance protests, saying “We are pleased that you heeded our plea not to join the protest, not because we don’t believe in protests or are indifferent to the current issues. We are not ashamed to commend your efforts, and we are here to offer our gratitude.”
He acknowledged the hardships facing the youth, including hunger, unemployment, and rising food prices, and assured that his administration would address these issues within available resources.
“Although you did not protest, we heard your concerns loud and clear. We are aware of the issues causing you distress,” said the Governor. “We recognise the challenges such as hunger, unemployment, and the high cost of food. We will endeavour to address these within the resources available in our state.”
Additionally, Governor Eno announced that 100 youths from each local government would be recruited into the Ibom Community Watch. He also increased student bursaries from ₦10,000 to ₦20,000 for undergraduates and from ₦20,000 to ₦30,000 for those pursuing professional courses and postgraduate studies.
Furthermore, he unveiled plans to create an employment portal for youths, alongside a grant programme of N50,000 to 5,000 youths monthly aimed at supporting small businesses and farming ventures.
