…Says He’s Ready to Take Oath on Quran to Defend His Reputation

Former Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir el-Rufai, has firmly rejected allegations of misappropriating funds during his tenure, stating he is prepared to swear on the Quran to affirm his innocence.

Speaking on Freedom Radio in Kaduna on Tuesday, el-Rufai expressed his commitment to public service and insisted he did not enter politics to steal or enrich himself.

In June, an ad hoc committee of the Kaduna House of Assembly recommended an investigation into the former governor, alleging that his administration diverted approximately N423 billion in state funds.

Responding to these accusations, el-Rufai stated, “I always say that whenever the former governors of Kaduna State and other leaders decide to take an oath swearing with the Quran that they never took people’s money, I’m also ready to swear.”

He further remarked, “I joined politics only to serve the people of Kaduna State; I didn’t come to look for money.”

El-Rufai claimed he has remained silent until now to observe the unfolding situation but has felt compelled to defend his honour and that of his allies, who he believes are being unjustly targeted.

He highlighted the lack of specific details regarding the alleged missing funds, stating, “We were accused of misappropriation of funds during our tenure without being given a specific area where the money went missing or who took it.”

El-Rufai stated he has entrusted the matter to God, saying, “As for me, I had already prayed two Raka’at on Friday night, leaving everything to God, seeking His judgement.”

He expressed confidence that justice would prevail, urging those with “evil plans, witch-hunts, and lies” against him to continue, as he believes he will ultimately receive justice from God.

The former governor also indicated his intention to return to politics by 2027. According to him, “There is no retirement in politics as there is in government work.”

He affirmed that his focus remains on serving the people, working alongside those dedicated to public service rather than personal gain.
