The Enugu State House of Assembly has urged the state government to ban all reckless celebrations during students’ graduation and signing-out ceremonies.

The motion moved by Anthony Okechukwu Mbah, member representing Nkanu East Constituency and supported by the lawmakers condemned the car riding shows, alcohol abuse, and all other forms of reckless activities associated with final year students’ last examination day.

Concerned that such celebrations have left serious bodily injuries to some students, the last straw that broke Carmel’s back was the death of a student in the Institute of Management Technology, IMT, Enugu.

“The most recent event that happened at the Institute of Management and Technology, IMT, Enugu on Monday 30th Sept 2024 recorded a fatal accident that claimed a life.”

“Two other students were also critically injured and are receiving treatment at the National Orthopedic Hospital and Posche Hospital, Enugu respectively.”

The last signing-out celebration at IMT involved a student driving carelessly and at top speed within the school premises.

Probably, the student driving recklessly lost control and the car somersaulted causing a fatality, injuries, and destruction of government and public properties.

“There have been unreported incidences of rival cult clashes, sexual abuses, drug and alcoholic abuse over the years at different schools in Enugu during similar celebrations,” Mbah said.

The signing-out ceremony wherein students upon writing their last exams wear white T-shirts; other students write on the T-shirts marking their signing out of the institution of higher learning.

Extreme cases then involved baptizing the graduating student with sachet water but these days, they are involved in reckless driving, cars on convoys with students hanging on the roof of the vehicle and windows as they drive around the state constituting a nuisance.

These reckless activities have brought sorrow to families and society hence the need to bring it to a stop; banning this pattern of celebration will restore the dignity of graduating students.

In his remark, the Speaker of the House, Uche Ugwu, commended Anthony Mbah and other lawmakers for moving the motion, the robust debate and support for the motion.

The Speaker then directed the Clerk of the House to ensure the relevant authorities are notified of the House’s resolution; the state government Ministries, departments, and agencies in charge of institutions of learning are to ensure that the motion is implemented.

Meanwhile, the Enugu State Water User Association Bill, (HB. 17) 2024 sponsored by the Leader of the House, Iloabuchi Aniagu has scaled through the first reading.
