The Nigerian Defence Headquarters announced on Thursday that several terrorist leaders in the North Central region have expressed their willingness to surrender and lay down arms.

This was disclosed by Major-General Edward Buba, the Director of Defence Media Operations, during a briefing in Abuja on the progress of military operations.

Buba explained that the military has opened “surrendering corridors” for those ready to abandon violence, emphasising that, “the options open to them is to surrender or be killed on the battlefield.”

According to him, “Some terrorist leaders, commanders and combatants have indicated surrender. We are opening a surrendering corridor for that purpose.”

In addition to this development, Buba reported significant progress in ongoing anti-terror operations. In October alone, 481 terrorists were neutralised, 741 suspects apprehended, and 492 kidnapped hostages rescued.

He highlighted the ongoing operations in the North-West region under “Operation Hadarin Daji,” where troops have intensified efforts to establish a secure environment for agricultural and socio-economic activities.

He reported that during recent operations, troops neutralised 163 terrorists, apprehended 82 suspects, and rescued 80 kidnapped hostages.

“Additionally, troops recovered 121 AK47 rifles, 32 fabricated guns, 53 assorted arms, 2,134 rounds of 7.62mm special, 1,015 rounds of 7.62mm NATO and 75 assorted ammunition,” Buba added.

Similarly, under “Operation Whirl Punch,” troops in the region successfully neutralised 30 terrorists, arrested 111 suspects, and rescued 52 hostages.

The operation yielded nine AK47 rifles, 16 assorted arms, 160 rounds of 7.62mm special, 43 rounds of 7.62mm NATO, and 36 assorted ammunition.

The Defence Headquarters reaffirmed its dedication to maintaining stability across the North Central and North West regions, assuring that offensive operations will continue to dismantle terrorist enclaves, secure local communities, and promote the safe resumption of socio-economic activities.
