The Nigerian military has been ranked 39th in the latest Global Firepower (GFP) rankings out of 145 countries reviewed, marking a decline from its 36th position in 2023 and 35th in 2022.
Among African nations, Nigeria also dropped from third to fourth place, ranking behind Egypt, Algeria, and South Africa.
Egypt remains Africa’s top-ranked military power, followed by Algeria, South Africa, and Nigeria. Other African nations in the top 10 include Ethiopia, Angola, Morocco, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Tunisia, and Sudan.
Despite Nigeria’s commitment to military infrastructure and high-grade hardware, it has continued to fall in the rankings.
Globally, the United States maintained its first position for the 18th consecutive year.
“The United States showcases commanding values in many major material, financial, and resource categories,” the GFP report stated.
The US is followed by Russia, China, India, and South Korea.
The United Kingdom, Japan, Turkey, Pakistan, and Italy complete the top 10. France, Brazil, Indonesia, Iran, and Egypt rank 11th to 15th, respectively. Australia, Israel, Ukraine, Germany, and Spain hold positions 16 to 20.
The GFP report explained that the rankings are determined using over 60 factors, including military units, financial capacity, logistics, and geography.
“Our unique, in-house formula allows smaller, more technologically advanced nations to compete with larger, less-developed powers,” it stated.
The Nigerian military has yet to respond to the rankings.
