Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Modestus Ojiebe, who was abducted on Sunday along the Abuja-Kaduna Expressway, has been rescued by security operatives, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has confirmed.
Ojiebe, attached to the Kwara State Police Command, was kidnapped Sunday night near the Dei-Dei Police Barracks in Abuja while attempting to fix his broken-down vehicle.
According to counter-insurgency expert Zagazola Makama, the officer and his wife were initially robbed of their mobile phones and ATM cards before the assailants discovered his police identity card.
“While he was attempting to fix the vehicle, an ash-coloured Mercedes-Benz with four armed occupants stopped behind him,” Zagazola Makama narrated.
“The assailants searched and robbed Ojiebe and his wife. However, upon discovering his police identity card, they forced him into their vehicle and sped off, leaving his wife and their car at the scene.”
Following the attack, security operatives launched an intensive stop-and-search operation at entry and exit points across the FCT.
In a statement on Monday, FCT Police Public Relations Officer, Josephine Adeh, confirmed that the officer had been rescued.
“Upon receiving the distress call, Divisional Police Officer (DPO) Dawaki acted swiftly by leading his patrol team while he alerted all police checkpoints and key entry and exit points into the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). This decisive response enabled the successful rescue of the officer and his reunion with his family on the same night,” she stated.
She further disclosed that the kidnappers abandoned their victim and fled into the bush in Garaku, Nasarawa State, when they realised security operatives were closing in on them. Efforts are ongoing to apprehend the culprits.
Meanwhile, FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Olatunji Disu, has urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to security agencies, providing the police emergency line: 08032003913 for immediate response.
