NewsNigeriaPoliticsDefamatory Speech: Kano Govt To Descend On Radio Stations

In regulating political discourse in Kano by ensuring that discussions remain respectful and constructive, Kano State Government will take decisive action against political defamatory speeches in the state, particularly on radio stations.

The State Commissioner for Information, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya who dropped the hint while speaking during a stakeholders’ meeting organized by the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) in Kano, reiterates government’s commitment to curbing offensive speech in the media.

The Commissioner urged Kano residents to support the government’s efforts by rejecting those who use public platforms to insult others under the guise of free speech.

“The governor is deeply concerned about this issue, and he has given us the responsibility to ensure that political activities in Kano are conducted with civility and respect.

“To address this, the government has engaged with radio commentators, popularly known as “Sojojin Baka” (verbal warriors), and established an association called the “Gauta Club.” This initiative aims to monitor and identify those making inflammatory statements on the airwaves.

“We have already registered members of the group so that we can keep track of their identities and ensure accountability. You cannot solve a problem without knowing the people behind it,” Waiya explained.

He warned political programme hosts on radio stations to avoid providing a platform for defamatory remarks.

“It is shocking that someone in Kano can openly insult a governor or a traditional ruler just because they were paid as little as 10,000 naira. This behaviour will no longer be tolerated,” he declared.
