A deadly ambush by bandits in Zamfara State has claimed the lives of 10 security operatives, including six members of the Community Protection Guards (CPG) and four vigilantes.
The attack happened on Saturday in Anka Local Government Area after security forces, led by the Nigerian Army, raided bandit hideouts in Sunke Forest.
The operation successfully took out several criminals and seized weapons, but as the troops were returning, they were ambushed near Bagega.
Governor Dauda Lawal, confirming the incident on Facebook, described the attack as heartbreaking.
“I received the heartbreaking news that bandits ambushed some members of the Zamfara State Community Protection Guards in Anka Local Government,” he said.
“The incident followed a security operation where our forces, alongside the Nigerian Army, attacked the bandits’ hideouts, successfully neutralising several of them and recovering weapons. On their way back, they were attacked in Bagega, resulting in the killing of six CPG operatives and four vigilantes.”
He added that three people were still missing, adding that he has ordered medical assistance for the wounded and the distribution of relief materials to the families of the deceased.
Zamfara has been one of Nigeria’s worst-hit States by banditry, with repeated attacks on security forces and civilians.
