Crime & SecurityNewsNigeriaSoldiers Killed as Boko Haram, ISWAP Attack Military Base in Borno

At least three Nigerian soldiers were killed on Monday night when Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) insurgents launched a fierce assault on a Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Wajiroko, Borno State.

According to a military signal obtained by SaharaReporters, the terrorists struck around 10:00 p.m., causing casualties among Nigerian troops, including the Brigade Commander and two other soldiers who sustained injuries.

“At approximately 242205A MAR 25, own troops at FOB Wajiroko came under attack by BHT/ISWAP terrorists. This prompted the Brigade to call for air support in addition to deploying a reinforcement (RFT) team immediately,” the signal read in part.

However, the first reinforcement team encountered an improvised explosive device (IED), forcing a second team, led by Brigade Commander Brig. Gen. UF Abubakar, to be dispatched toward Azir Bridge.

While en route, the commander’s vehicle struck another IED, killing three soldiers and injuring the commander and two others.

A surveillance drone detected fire at the base, with reports indicating that several troops retreated towards Sabongari, suggesting that the FOB may have been overrun by insurgents.

Meanwhile, another attack reportedly happened on another military base in Wulgo, near the Cameroon border.

A military source confirmed that troops in both Wajiroko and Wulgo faced simultaneous assaults.

The renewed attacks come as the government intensifies efforts to reopen the Maiduguri-Damboa-Biu road, which has been inaccessible due to persistent security threats.

Senator Ali Ndume (APC, Borno South) decried the resurgence of Boko Haram attacks, warning that the situation in Southern Borno was deteriorating.

“It is really terrible, the renewed Boko Haram attacks in Borno, especially in Southern Borno Senatorial District. As I speak, many communities in Gwoza, Askira-Uba, Chibok, Damboa, Biu, Hawul, among other council areas, have been witnessing a series of attacks, destruction, and looting of property without confrontation by our security forces,” he lamented.

Ndume urged the federal government to take decisive action, calling for the deployment of advanced military technology to combat insurgency.

The Nigerian military has yet to issue an official statement regarding the attacks, but sources confirm that reinforcement efforts are ongoing, with troops placed on high alert.
