Reports emerged on Tuesday that E-Money, the flamboyant businessman and socialite, was arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over allegations bordering on the abuse of the naira and defacement of foreign currencies.
The businessman, whose real name is Emeka Okonkwo Daniel, was reportedly picked up by operatives of the anti-graft agency late Monday night at his residence in Omole, Lagos.
His arrest, reports said, followed a viral video where he was seen spraying wads of American dollars at a lavish social event, an act that contravenes provisions of the Foreign Exchange Act.
According to the reports, a source within the EFCC confirmed that “preliminary investigations are ongoing, and he will be charged to court as soon as the probe is concluded.” The source also confirmed that E-Money was immediately flown to Abuja for further questioning.
As of the time of writing this report, there was no official statement from the EFCC regarding E-Money’s arrest.
However, in what appears to be a subtle response to the news, the socialite broke his online silence at about 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday by posting a video on his Facebook page. The clip was accompanied by the caption: “No tension, everywhere good, I see all your love and support. God bless you all.”
The post has since attracted thousands of comments, with fans expressing concern and solidarity.
