NewsSportsTobi Amusan Wins Rabat Diamond League with Record-Breaking Run

Nigerian sprint hurdler Tobi Amusan has bounced back in style, clinching her first major win of the 2025 season at the Diamond League meet in Rabat, Morocco.

The 28-year-old clocked a season’s best of 12.24 seconds in the women’s 100m hurdles, setting a new meeting record and breaking the previous mark of 12.51 seconds set by Brianna McNeal.

This victory marks a significant turnaround for Amusan, who had earlier finished fourth in both the Xiamen and Shanghai Diamond League meets in April and May. In those races, she recorded times of 12.74 and 12.66 seconds, respectively.

Reflecting on her performance in Rabat, Amusan attributed her improvement to adjustments in her training regimen.

“More hurdles practice, because I have been doing more sprinting. It was after the first two Diamond League meetings, I knew I had to go back to doing more hurdle drills,” she said. “Two weeks in, I can tell the difference.”

Following a challenging 2024 season, where she failed to reach the final at the Paris Olympics, Amusan made a strategic move by joining the Racers Track Club in Jamaica, under the guidance of renowned coach Glen Mills, who previously coached sprint legend Usain Bolt.

Amusan’s triumph in Rabat not only signifies a return to form but also sets a positive tone for the remainder of the season.

As the reigning world record holder in the 100m hurdles with a time of 12.12 seconds set in 2022, and a three-time Diamond League champion from 2021 to 2023, she continues to solidify her status as one of Nigeria’s premier athletes.

Looking ahead, Amusan is expected to compete in upcoming Diamond League events, as she builds momentum towards the World Athletics Championships later this year.
