The Federal Government has declared Thursday, 12th June 2025, as a public holiday to commemorate this year’s Democracy Day celebration.
This was made known in a statement issued by the Ministry of Interior on Sunday, 8th June, and signed by the Permanent Secretary, Dr Magdalene Ajani.
According to the statement, the Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government and congratulated Nigerians on the occasion of 26 years of uninterrupted democratic governance.
He said, “June 12 represents our historic journey to building a nation where truth and justice reign and peace is sustained and our future assured. The last 26 years tell the story of our resilience, strength, and courage, and a hope renewed than ever.”
While noting that democracy thrives on continuous improvement and citizen participation, the Minister reaffirmed the present administration’s commitment to democratic values.
He said the Renewed Hope government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu (GCFR) remains dedicated to upholding the principles of democracy, rooted in the freely expressed will of the people to determine Nigeria’s political, economic, social, and cultural direction.
Democracy Day, officially recognised on 12th June, marks the anniversary of the 1993 presidential election widely regarded as Nigeria’s freest and fairest. The day symbolises the country’s long struggle for democratic rule and civil governance.
