President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will confer national honours on select federal lawmakers during a special joint sitting of the National Assembly on Thursday, June 12, to commemorate Nigeria’s Democracy Day.
This was disclosed in a statement released in Abuja on Sunday by the House of Representatives’ spokesman, Akin Rotimi Jr.
According to Rotimi Jr., a special joint sitting of the National Assembly will hold on June 12 to mark this year’s Democracy Day, with President Tinubu attending as the special guest of honour. The President is also expected to address both chambers during the sitting.
“The programme will also feature goodwill messages from former presiding officers of the National Assembly and the conferment of National Honours on select legislators by Mr President,” Rotimi Jr. said.
This year’s celebration carries the theme: “26 Years of Democracy: Renewing Our Commitment to National Development.”
Rotimi Jr. described the joint sitting as more than just a ceremonial gathering. He said it is a defining moment in Nigeria’s democratic journey, a reminder of how far the country has come and the National Assembly’s central role in keeping democracy alive.
He noted that over the past 26 years, the legislature has played a crucial role in promoting democratic values, ensuring accountability in governance, and driving national development.
He encouraged Nigerians to use the day as a moment of sober reflection and renewed dedication to the democratic ideals of unity, peace, and prosperity.
He said: “Democracy Day should inspire renewed patriotism and commitment to building a more inclusive, prosperous, and united nation.”
