NewsNigeriaPoliticsTinubu’s Presidency Immortalised in Abuja With Barracks, Schools, Roads

In just two years as President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu has seen a growing number of major public landmarks in Nigeria’s capital city renamed in his honour.

Since taking office in May 2023, at least six prominent institutions in the Federal Capital Territory have either been named or renamed after the President. From military barracks and tertiary institutions to research centres and roads, the capital is quickly filling up with structures that now bear the Tinubu name.

One of the most high-profile changes came just days before this year’s Democracy Day, when the Federal Government renamed Abuja’s International Conference Centre — a historic venue for national and international events — as the Bola Tinubu International Conference Centre. It is now the sixth known institution in Abuja to honour the President in this way.

Earlier in January, the Nigerian Army inaugurated the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Barracks in Asokoro, built to provide better accommodation for troops and improve security operations in the FCT.

Around the same time, the Federal Ministry of Education unveiled the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Polytechnic in Gwarinpa, describing it as part of efforts to boost access to technical and vocational education in the capital.

In December 2024, the Ministry of Interior launched the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Technology Innovation Complex (BATTIC) — a modern hub focused on research and digital transformation for the Nigerian Immigration Service.

In May 2024, the National Assembly also renamed its library and legislative research centre the Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu Building to mark his first year in office. The gesture, according to the leadership of the Assembly, was to “recognise his contributions to national development.”

Perhaps the most subtle renaming happened in March, when part of the Southern Parkway in Abuja quietly became Bola Ahmed Tinubu Way, with new signage installed without public fanfare.

While these changes have drawn applause from some supporters who see them as well-deserved recognition of Tinubu’s long-standing political career, others question whether such honours are politically motivated.
