Crime & SecurityNewsNigeriaWe’re Ready to Negotiate with Repentant Bandits — Sokoto Govt

The Sokoto State Government says it is open to peace talks with bandits who are willing to surrender and reintegrate into society, stressing that force alone cannot end the region’s security crisis.

Governor Ahmed Aliyu’s Special Adviser on Security, Ahmed Usman, made this known in a statement on Wednesday, highlighting the state’s commitment to restoring peace through dialogue and collaboration.

“Many historical conflicts have not ended solely through the use of force, but through meaningful dialogue,” the government stated.

According to the statement, the state government is ready to negotiate with any armed group that shows genuine interest in peace and lays down their arms.

“Government has reaffirmed its readiness to negotiate with bandits who demonstrate a genuine commitment to surrender and reintegrate peacefully into society,” the statement added.

Governor Aliyu’s administration also extended heartfelt appreciation to President Bola Tinubu, the service chiefs, and security personnel working tirelessly to keep the state safe.

“We are expressing profound appreciation to President Bola Tinubu, the service chiefs, security commanders, and frontline personnel for their unwavering efforts in safeguarding the region. Their sacrifices are deeply appreciated. May Allah bless the souls of our fallen heroes and grant comfort to their families,” the statement read.

On the federal government’s plan to deploy forest guards across the country, Sokoto welcomed the move but advised that integrity must be prioritised in the recruitment process. The government also emphasised the need for the guards to work hand-in-hand with conventional security forces.

It noted that without proper supervision and coordination with the local population, the initiative may not yield the desired results.

“Government’s position reflects a broader strategy aimed at balancing security operations with community engagement and long-term peacebuilding efforts,” the statement concluded.
