…7 Injured in Fish Market Bomb Blast
Two deadly suicide bombings rocked Konduga Local Government Area of Borno State in less than 24 hours, leaving a combined total of 34 people dead and dozens injured.
In the more deadly of the two incidents, at least 24 people were killed late Friday night when a female suicide bomber detonated an explosive device at a crowded food joint in Konduga town, located about 36 kilometres from Maiduguri, the state capital.
The Borno State Police Command, which confirmed the attack, said the explosion occurred around 10:00 p.m. on 20 June, when residents had gathered in large numbers to eat and buy food for the night.
Police sources told Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency reporter, that the impact of the blast was devastating.
“The explosion resulted in the fatal wounding of 24 persons, both male and female, while an unspecified number of others sustained varying degrees of injuries,” a police source said.
According to the police, the bomber’s body was ripped apart by the explosion, with only her head recovered at the scene.
Emergency response teams, including the Military and Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (EOD-CBRN) units, Tactical Teams, Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), and local hunters, later arrived at the site of the blast.
They cordoned off the area and conducted a thorough search for any additional explosive devices. No further threats were discovered.
The injured victims were evacuated to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital where they are currently receiving medical care. The corpses of the deceased were also deposited at the same hospital.
Medical personnel on duty confirmed the deaths and as of the time of the report, burial rites were underway.
Security authorities have since beefed up patrols across Konduga to prevent further attacks.
Earlier on Friday night, tragedy had already struck the town when a suspected Boko Haram suicide bomber detonated an improvised explosive device at a crowded fish market in Konduga.
According to eyewitnesses and security sources who spoke to Zagazola Makama, the bomber sneaked into the market disguised as a civilian and detonated the explosive, killing 10 people and injuring seven others.
“The attacker infiltrated the market disguised as a civilian before setting off the explosives,” a source said.
The explosion killed the bomber and 10 civilians on the spot. Seven others were injured and taken to a nearby medical facility for treatment.
Troops of the Nigerian Army, alongside emergency response teams, were quickly deployed to the scene.
The entire area has since been cordoned off by security operatives to prevent further infiltration by suspected terrorists.
