…Condemns Borno Bombing and Kano Explosion
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed deep sadness and outrage over a string of violent incidents that claimed dozens of lives in Borno, Plateau, and Kano States in recent days, calling the attacks “unconscionable” and vowing that justice would be served.
In a press statement issued on Sunday, the President condemned what he described as “the cowardly suicide bombing in Konduga, Borno State, the horrifying lynching of innocent travellers in Plateau State, and the deadly explosion in Kano,” and ordered immediate response from relevant security and emergency agencies.
“The bombing in Borno claimed the lives of innocent Nigerians and was a cruel attempt to spread fear. I have directed the National Emergency Management Agency to provide urgent support to survivors, and I extend my deepest condolences to the Government and people of Borno State,” he said.
President Tinubu, who vowed to crush the insurgent group responsible for the Borno blast, directed security forces to increase their offensive against Boko Haram terrorists, especially those targeting civilian populations.
“I also urge our security forces to intensify efforts to hunt down and rout the remnants of Boko Haram and crush their ability to inflict harm on soft targets as a diversionary tactic,” he stated.
On the gruesome killing of 12 wedding guests in Plateau State by a mob in Mangu Local Government Area, Tinubu said the murder must not go unanswered.
“In Plateau State, I strongly condemn the barbaric murder of 12 wedding guests – peaceful citizens who were simply returning from a joyous occasion. I have ordered the Nigerian Police Force to work with all relevant security and intelligence agencies to ensure that those responsible are swiftly apprehended and prosecuted. These killings must not go unanswered,” he said.
The President also urged the Plateau State Government to step up its response to communal violence and work closely with security agencies to prevent future occurrences.
“I also call on the Government of Plateau State to act decisively to end this vicious cycle of violence and work with security agencies to get to the root of this recent incident and use it as a deterrent against future occurrences,” he added.
He reaffirmed the constitutional right of Nigerians to move freely across the country without fear, warning that the government would not tolerate any attempt to curtail this freedom.
“Freedom of movement is a non-negotiable right of every Nigerian, and we will not tolerate any attempt by anyone or group of people to curtail that fundamental freedom through acts of extreme violence and fear,” Tinubu stressed.
The President also addressed the industrial explosion that killed five people at a scrap metal facility in Kano, attributing the incident to poor safety standards and calling for accountability.
“Furthermore, I sympathise with the families affected by the explosion at a scrap metal facility in Kano, where five lives were lost,” he said. “This tragic incident highlights the urgent need for stricter adherence to workplace safety protocols. I have directed the relevant agencies to investigate the cause and take appropriate actions to prevent a recurrence.”
President Tinubu ended the statement with a message of solidarity and hope to the grieving communities and victims of the recent tragedies.
“I offer my heartfelt prayers to the families of all those we have lost and to the injured. To the people of Borno, Plateau, Kano, and Kaduna States, I stand with you in grief and resolve.
“We will not rest until justice is done and peace and safety are fully restored across our land. May the souls of the departed rest in peace, and may God continue to protect the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
