Worried about the growing menace of drug abuse across Yobe state, the 17 Council Local Government Chairmen in the State have been directed to cooperate with traditional rulers to take proactive measures to curb the menace.
Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State, who gave the directive Tuesday in Damaturu while addressing the council chairmen and traditional leaders at a forum focused on strengthening the primary healthcare system, expressed concern over the rise of drug abuse, particularly in some northern states.
“We must act now and proactively to save our youth and the future of the state from the dangers posed by drug abuse, which is currently threatening many states.
“The full force of the law be brought to bear on anyone found trafficking or consuming prohibited drugs and substances within the state,” the Governor said.
Buni, who noted that a healthy population is an essential asset for speedy socio-economic development, commended the Federal Government, development partners, and traditional rulers for their continued support of primary healthcare delivery in Yobe.
“This administration is committed to healthcare delivery at all levels because a healthy population is indeed an essential asset for speedy socio-economic development.
“We therefore remain focused on making quality healthcare services accessible and affordable to our people across the state.
“The establishment of 142 functional primary healthcare centres, provision of equipment, drugs, and recruitment and deployment of over 2,000 qualified healthcare personnel to various healthcare facilities have no doubt taken healthcare delivery in the state to greater heights,” he said.
