The Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Most Reverend Matthew Kukah, has issued a stark warning on Nigeria’s deteriorating security situation, describing the daily loss of lives in the country as unparalleled anywhere else in the world.
Speaking on Monday in Yola, the Adamawa State capital, at the launch of a book on Governor Ahmadu Fintiri entitled The Man They Could Not Stop, Kukah lamented that the nation’s growing insecurity and religious divisions were threatening its future.
The biography was written by the Governor’s former Director General of Media and Communication, Solomon Kumangar.
“What is happening in Nigeria cannot happen in Sudan, Cameroon, Niger, Ghana, or any other country in the world,” Kukah said. “There is no other country in the world where 10 people are killed on Monday, 50 on Tuesday, 100 on Wednesday, and the killings go on every week. How can such a country move forward?”
Expressing deep concern about the pattern of violence, the cleric added: “Only in Nigeria do people die as Christians and Muslims. The Western media is fuelling the killings along religious lines — 20 Christians killed, 30 Muslims killed.”
Kukah described Nigeria’s fault lines as exacerbated by external narratives and called on both political and religious leaders to build strong institutions capable of uniting Nigerians and fostering peace and socio-economic development.
The Bishop also commended Prof. Attahiru Jega, former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), for his role in quelling post-2023 governorship tensions in Adamawa State.
The book launch drew a notable gathering, including governors Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State, the Deputy Governor of Oyo State, and representatives from Gombe, Borno, Yobe, Taraba and Plateau states.
The event also highlighted a moment of cross-party engagement, with Mustapha Salihu, the APC National Vice Chairman for the North-East, invited to unveil the biography.
