The Taraba State Command of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has apprehended
A 40-year-old suspected notorious bandit, Jonathan Wunuji from Kurmi Local Government Area of Taraba state have been arrested for being in possession of a locally made pistol.
The suspect, a resident of Zambana village who is known for terrorizing his immediate community was paraded at the NSCDC headquarters in Jalingo, by the State Commandant of the corps, Anthony Bala Bitrus.
The Commandant who was represented by the command’s spokesperson, Chief Superintendent of Corps (CSC) Iliya Samaila, explained that the arrest followed swift action on credible intelligence received by the corps.
“The operation was carried out on May 2 in Visaula town, Kurmi Local Government Area and that the suspect was found with an unlicensed locally fabricated pistol and two live cartridges,” he said.
He added that during the encounter, Wunuji allegedly threatened to open fire on the NSCDC operatives on duty but was promptly disarmed and subdued before he could execute the threat.
“Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect may not have been acting alone, as he is suspected of working with other accomplices within the area to intimidate and harass residents.
“Wunuji had been operating an unlawful checkpoint, where he reportedly extorted passersby and motorists, despite previous interventions by community leaders and NSCDC personnel to halt the activity,” according to Samaila said.
He reaffirmed the corps’ resolve to ensure that individuals and groups undermining the peace and security of communities in Taraba are tracked down and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
Samaila call on members of the public to remain alert and support security agencies with timely, reliable information, emphasized that community-based intelligence is vital for proactive policing and for tackling the growing trend of criminality in the state.
The NSCDC spokesperson disclosed that the suspect has confessed to the offence and will be arraigned in court without delay.
