The Enugu State Police Command has commenced enforcement of the directives of the Inspector General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, to impound unregistered vehicles and to enforce other offenses under the National Road Traffic Regulations, NRTR.

The state enforcement led by the Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, resulted in the impoundment of 195 vehicles; the affected vehicle owners will be charged in court and prosecuted accordingly.

Reasons cited by the IGP for new crackdown include the security risks posed by such vehicles, their frequent use in criminal activities, and violation of existing regulations.

A press statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, states,

“The Commissioner of Police, Enugu State Command, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, psc, mspsp, on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, led the professional enforcement of the nationwide ban on unregistered vehicles and vehicles with covered, defaced, obscured, improperly affixed, unauthorized or missing number plates across the State.”

“The operation resulted in the impoundment of 195 vehicles for violating the provisions of the National Road Traffic Regulations, NRTR, and other extant laws. The affected vehicle owners will be charged to court and prosecuted accordingly.”

“The impounded vehicles include those that are unregistered, bear covered, defaced, obscured, unauthorized, or improperly affixed official number plates, or have only one number plate instead of the legally required two.”

Commending his officers for successfully conducting the enforcement, CP Giwa reminded motorists of their obligation to comply with NRTR and other extant laws as the enforcement continues.

“The Command will sustain the enforcement and ensure that all offenders are prosecuted in accordance with the law.”

The IGP’s directive seeks to enforce the following: Mandatory Visible Plates, Ban on Concealment, Ban on Unregistered Vehicles, and SPY Number Plates Ban.

“Mandatory Visible Plates: All vehicles must be duly registered and display securely affixed reflective number plates both at the front and the rear.”

“Ban on Concealment: Covering number plates with leather, plastics, or other materials to obscure lettering is strictly prohibited.”

“Unregistered Vehicles: Driving unregistered vehicles is illegal. Hand-painted or fake/unauthorized plates are also classified as traffic violations.”

“SPY Number Plates Ban: The use of unapproved or police SPY number plates remains banned without exception.”
