… Warns of Fresh Boko Haram Attacks in Adamawa, Borno
The Nigerian Army has commenced an investigation into the leakage of a classified Department of State Services (DSS) intelligence report warning of planned attacks by suspected Boko Haram terrorists in parts of Adamawa and Borno states.
The development followed the circulation of the confidential security advisory, which alerted military authorities to impending attacks in the Michika Local Government Area of Adamawa State and the Askira-Uba Local Government Area of Borno State.
According to the leaked DSS memo dated 27 July 2026, intelligence available to the agency indicated that the planned attacks were linked to the reported collapse of a ceasefire arrangement between the terrorists and the governments of the two states.
A copy of the intelligence report, seen by TheCable, stated that the insurgents were planning coordinated operations, including the abduction of senior government officials, councilors, district heads, religious leaders, and residents of the affected communities.
The memo read: “Intelligence has revealed plans by Boko Haram terrorists to carry out major operations around Michika LGA, and Askira Uba LGA in Adamawa and Borno States, respectively to register the collapse of ceasefire agreement with the state governments. The terrorists planned to abduct high government officials, councilors, district heads, pastors, and locals residing in the LGAs.
“Furthermore, the terrorist elements are targeting to kidnap district head of Michika alongside his son, who stays in his residence. Already, the terrorists have deployed surveillance team in preparation for the planned attack.”
A source in the DSS confirmed the intelligence report’s authenticity to TheCable, describing it as a routine operational advisory issued to relevant security agencies.
The service subsequently advised troops, forest guards and other security operatives to strengthen surveillance and security across the affected communities to avert the planned attacks.
Similar security advisories have been issued by the DSS in recent months to prevent kidnappings and terrorist attacks in vulnerable parts of the country.
However, the leakage of the classified document has now triggered an internal investigation within the Nigerian Army.
Findings revealed that senior officers at the 232 Battalion in Yola, Adamawa State, have begun a probe to identify the personnel responsible for circulating the confidential document, which the DSS had transmitted to alert the military to the security threat.
A security source familiar with the development said the document had already been received and officially registered by the battalion before it entered the public domain.
The source said, “If you see the document, it was already punched in the registry of the 232 Battalion. It was after that an officer snapped it and sent it out to whoever he or she wanted for reasons best known to the person.”
He expressed concern that the leak had generated unnecessary fear among residents of the affected communities.
According to him, “The sad aspect is that people are now panicking. That was why the DSS quietly alerted the 232 Battalion to be on the alert over the pending attacks, but unfortunately, the document was leaked out.”
Another military officer confirmed that the battalion had commenced an internal investigation, describing the leakage as an act capable of undermining national security.
The officer said, “There is nothing that can stop us from fishing out those behind the leaked document from the DSS. We must fish out the bad eggs among us. Nigeria’s national security cannot be compromised for personal selfish interest.”
The intelligence report specifically identified the District Head of Michika and his son as among those allegedly being targeted for abduction.
It also stated that insurgents had already deployed surveillance teams to monitor activities in the affected areas ahead of the planned operations.
The DSS consequently advised the Nigerian Army to work closely with forest guards and local hunters to reinforce security in vulnerable communities and prevent the planned attacks.
Michika and Askira-Uba, both located close to the Sambisa Forest axis and Nigeria’s border with Cameroon, have experienced repeated Boko Haram attacks over the years despite sustained military offensives.
Security agencies have continued to maintain heightened surveillance across the North-East as troops intensify counter-insurgency operations against Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).
