The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Adamawa State Council has inaugurated Online Media Chapel and NAS FM Chapel aimed at strengthening professionalism, ethical journalism and credible information dissemination in the digital age.
Those inaugurated for the Adamawa Online Media Chapel, has Vagawa Bolgent of Gazette News, Chairman, while Lucy Musa of Insight News is Secretary and Joy Dennis of The Guardian as Treasurer.
Similarly, Dominic Yohanna was elected as Chairman of the NAS FM Chapel, with Sa’adatu Abubakar as Secretary, Nafisat Hassan Belel as Assistant Secretary, Bello Abdullahi as Treasurer, Peace Francis as Financial Secretary, and Polycarp Amough as Auditor.
Inaugurating the chapels at the NUJ Press Centre in Yola, the Chairman, Adamawa State Council of the NUJ, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi, said the establishment of the new chapels reflects the union’s commitment to expanding its structure.
The NUJ Chairman stated that the new executives of the chapels would serve for three years in accordance with the NUJ Constitution, but can recontest again for another term.
He added that the Council will ensure all practicing journalists operate within the ethical standards of the profession, reminded them that joining the NUJ comes with a responsibility to uphold truth, fairness, and accountability in every report.
“Journalism is built on credibility. Every story must be verified before publication because once credibility is lost, public trust is difficult to regain. Let the ethics of our profession remain your guiding principle at all times,” Abdullahi said.
In a goodwill message, National President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Comrade Alhassan Yahaya, represented by the North East Vice President of NUJ, Comrade Zare Baba, described the inauguration of the Online Media Chapel as a landmark achievement that acknowledges the growing influence of digital journalism.
He urged members to view themselves as partners with conventional media organisations in promoting responsible journalism.
“The future of journalism is digital, but the values of journalism remain unchanged. Online journalists must complement conventional media by promoting accuracy, fairness and public interest reporting,” he said.
Also speaking, Adamawa State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Barr. Leader Leneke, commended the NUJ leadership for broadening the union’s reach and reinforcing professional standards.
He stressed that the media remains an indispensable pillar of democratic governance and urged journalists to ensure that every report is factual, balanced and thoroughly verified before publication.
On his part, Chief Press Secretary to Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, Mr. Humwashi Wonosikou, cautioned members of the Online Media Chapel against prioritising speed over accuracy.
“Being an online journalist does not mean behaving like a social media influencer. Professional journalism demands verification, cross-checking of facts and adherence to ethical standards before publication. That distinction must always be maintained,” Wonosikou said.
Also speaking, the Adamawa State Police Command, Police Public Relations Officer, SP Suleiman Yahaya Nguroje, congratulated the newly inaugurated chapels.
Represented by ASP Kadiri Amos, the PPRO reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to sustaining its partnership with journalists in promoting public safety, accountability and responsible information dissemination.
Veteran journalist and recipient of A.B.C Yola, Reporter of the Year Award (1997), Hassan Umar Shallpella, works with WAP as a Regional Correspondence. He was trained at Institute of Mass Communication and Technology Jos and Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, Training School Lagos.He was a News desk Editor and a Correspondent at the Punch newspaper and till 2019, was the Deputy Editor ofThe Scope newspaper.
