Adamawa State Government will soon establish a DNA forensic lab that will aid access to justice for Gender Based Violence survivors.
The State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Mrs. Lami Patrick disclosed this while declaring open the 16 days of activism designed to discourage violence against women and girls organized by her Ministry in collaboration with developing partners held at the Women Development Center Yola.
“The theme for this year is “Orange the World, Fund, Response, Prevent Conflict”, and the activities lined up for the sixteen days include talk shows, town hall meetings, and advocacy visits to galvanize and enlighten people on gender based violence.
“People should take responsibility to gear up action for protection of women, girls and people living with disabilities from all forms of abuse.
“Government all over the world share widely held views that women, girls, and people living with disabilities constitute an apprised exploited and unprivileged group in Nigeria.”
“Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri has declared zero tolerance against gender based violence and related acts in the state”. She added.
Patrick explained that the Government has taken action to bridge funding gaps to ensure provision of essential services to survivors of violence especially during the COVID-19 crisis.
Also speaking, the Adamawa Programme Officer of the Women United Nations Population Fund, in Adamawa Dr Danladi Idrisa who reiterated the commitment towards ensuring the end of Gender Base Violence, called on Government to speed up action in preventing and mitigating violence against women and girls.
“Women participation in politics, Governance and decision making is more limited in Nigeria as 75% of thirteen million (13m) out of school children are girls.
“Adamawa State Government to hasten the domestication of the child rights acts stressing that there is still high level of unwanted pregnancy and unsafe abortion in the country”. He said.
