The College

The Federal College of Education, FCE Yola was established in 1974, as a middle-level Teacher Training Institute. Hitherto, it was known as Federal advance Teacher’s College, (FATC) Yola.

However, actual academic activities commenced during the 1975/76 session, with a total of one hundred and fifty (150) students under the leadership of the Pioneer Principal Mr. C. Pollock, an expatriate.

At the time, the college was under the supervision of the Federal Ministry of Education. Mr, Pollock, as the Pioneer Principal, laid a solid foundation for the smooth take-off of the college and he completed his tenure in 1982.

Mr. M.C Okoye succeeded Mr. Pollock as the next Principal of the college. He continued from where his predecessor stopped. He was the principal of the college from 1982 – 1984. Mr. Wagabi O. Shittu, was appointed the next Principal of the college in 1984 – 1987 and it was during the tenure it was renamed from Federal advance Teacher’s College, (FATC) to Federal College of Education, (FCE) Yola and thus, the title of the head of the college automatically changed from Principal to Provost and Mr. Shittu could be said to be the first Provost.

After, Mr. Shittu came Prof. Gidado Tahir in 1987, Prof. Mustapha Abba’s tenure in 1996, and Dr. Aminu Chiroma in 2004. Dr. Aminu Chiroma was the first homebred Chief Executive of the college.

He rose through the ranks from Assistant Lecturer to Chief Lecturer which gave him added advantages on how to attend to the academic and administrative needs of the college.

Dr. Chiroma has lifted the college to a higher pedestal, as he touched all aspects of the College. The college has seen tremendous infrastructural development and road network as well as staff development.
