Award & RecognitionNewsFour Soldiers Honoured for Diligence to Duty Amidst Public Criticism

ENUGU — Cleanness is next to godliness and order hence the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 82 Division Nigerian Army, Major General Taoreed Lagbaja, deemed it necessary to honour four soldiers serving in the Division for the outstanding hygiene of the various portions of the cantonment assigned to them.

Presenting a motorcycle popularly known as okada to each of the four soldiers, Maj. Gen Lagbaja, disclosed that the gift is in appreciation of their outstanding conduct and advised them to be steadfast in their duties even when it seems no one is monitoring their output.

The four soldiers are Seargent Amodu Simon, Seargeant Oyinbo Emmanuel, Corporal Mbanaso Isaac and Private Ibrahim Lawal; they were honoured during an event held on Tuesday at Abakpa Cantonment Enugu.

Apart from a brand new motorcycle, each soldier was also given a Letter of Commendation from the GOC.

However, the choice of gift ‘motorcycle’ to deserving soldiers was greatly frowned at by the public who saw it laughable and a case of talking out of both sides of government’s mouth.

How could the Nigeria Army, top security agent in the nation gift her gallant soldiers with same okada which by security reports the government recently advocates its ban?

Not pleased with the choice of gift, Chukwukere Chidi Vincent wrote on Facebook, “What a country Nigeria? The same security officer, telling the Federal Government to ban motorcycle is still buying motorcycle.”

To Prince Adefresh, the gift of a motorcycle is demeaning as he felt a better gift would have been more deserving.

“Generals are collecting big executive cars and boys are collecting bikes. How are they motivating these ones? Anyway keep the good work boys; well done.”

Recall that following the activities of terrorists in the nation, the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami had announced the Federal Government is considering banning the use of commercial motorcycles and mining activities

Reason given for the ban according to Malami is that motorcycles were used by the bandits for movement while mining provides them the money to fund their arms supply.
