The Police Command of the Federal Capital Territory FCT has apprehended 19 members of the proscribed Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), aka Shi’ite movement for unlawful procession.
Recall that in July 2019, the Federal Government obtained a court order from the Federal High Court in Abuja to proscribe the Shiites’ organization.
On Thursday, the Federal High Court in Abuja has rejected an application filed by El-Zakzaky, leader of the movement, requesting the Department of State Services (DSS) to release his passport and that of his wife.
Presiding Judge, Justice Obiora Egwuatu, in his ruling, held that El-Zakzaky had failed to prove that the DSS took the passports away after his return from India.
Shortly after the ruling, the Shi’ite group protesters with some holding banners and placards that read, “Buhari must remove the travel ban on Sheikh El-Zakzaky”.
In a statement, FCT Police spokesperson, SP Josephine said around 400 members of the movement staged a protest from the Federal High Court to Eagle Square, and blocked vehicular movements.
She confirmed that 19 members of the group were arrested despite throwing stones at men of the force to resist arrest.
