Global Rights, a nongovernmental organization, has advocated for prosecuting perpetrators of electoral atrocities in the 2023 General Elections.
The organization appealed while launching a detailed report, titled: “In Pursuit of Justice: Forensic Insights into Election Atrocities,” a forensic analysis of documented cases and perpetrators in the last general elections.
The document was unveiled at a national dialogue in Abuja by Global Rights in collaboration with the Incident Centre for Election Atrocities (ICEA).
In her opening remarks, Abiodun Baiyewu, Executive Director of Global Rights, decried the recurring cases of electoral malpractices, emphasizing their detrimental effects on election legitimacy and public trust in democracy.
“Politicians had continued to use the weaponization of words and imagery to sway emotions and drive violence during every electoral circle,” Baiyewu said.
She noted that addressing these concerns was beyond seeking justice for individual electoral cycles.
The Executive Director of ‘We The People’ and Lead Researcher of the document, Ken Henshaw who presented a paper titled “Nigeria as a Crime Scene: Forensic Analysis Presentation,” proposed leveraging advanced technology and dedicated resources, such as real-time surveillance systems and online platforms, to monitor developments and detect irregularities promptly during elections.
Henshawthe said individuals promoting voter suppression, hate speech, and ethnic profiling promoted tension by making the elections a battlefield and yet, remained largely unaccountable for their actions.
He decried the alarming role of non-state actors in driving and perpetrating by use of social media to promote fake news and hate speech
The report provides crucial leads for law enforcement agencies to pursue identified perpetrators of electoral violence, both preceding and following the 2023 general elections, underscoring the urgent need for governmental accountability and action, which was needed to restore the confidence of the people.
The report recommended that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) be relieved of its responsibility to prosecute electoral offenses.
