Barrister Sly Ezeokenwa was returned on Wednesday by the Supreme Court, as the National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance—APGA. This is coming five months after the Independent National Electoral Commission—INEC—recognized Chief Edozie Njoku based on an earlier court decision ordering INEC to recognize Chief Njoku as APGA’s National Chairman.
The Supreme Court’s decision on Wednesday, which recognized Barrister Sly Ezeokenwa’s leadership, perhaps, marked a milestone in resolving the lingering leadership impasse in APGA. The court also fined Chief Edozie Njoku N20 million.
Historically, APGA has been a one-state party, with foot-holding only in Anambra State. Yet, from inception, leadership tussle has been a defining characteristic of APGA. The party’s founder and first National Chairman was removed and replaced by Chief Victor Umeh who is now a Labour Party Senator, representing Anambra Central Senatorial District. Halfway, Chief Umeh was removed and replaced in a convention conducted by the then governor, Mr. Peter Obi, which produced Maxi Okwu as Umeh’s successor. Shortly, Chief Umeh was returned by the court as the substantive National Chairman of APGA and after his tenure, he handed over to Chief Victor Oye, who had a running battle with Chief Jude Okeke and later, Chief Edozie Njoku. Before the 2021 Anambra Governorship election, the Candidate of Oye’s faction of APGA, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, was dropped by INEC, and in his place; Hon. Chukwuma Umeoji was recognized as the rightful candidate. This was later resolved and Soludo was returned as the candidate. While these battles went on, Chief Oye enjoyed the political covering of the former governor, Chief Willie Obiano, and eventually Barr. Sly Ezeokenwa succeeded Oye through a convention of the party. Shortly after, Chief Edozie Njoku was recognized as the National Chairman of APGA, before the court decision on Wednesday that restored Barr. Sly Ezeokenwa.
It is yet to be seen if the last has been heard of the protracted leadership tussle in APGA.
